The gift of giving
by Karen
In his novel A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens gave us one of life’s most important messages about caring for those around us. Scrooge is rich in money and the Cratchits are rich in love, and together they give to each other a gift of what they had in plenty.

This year the gift of giving has never been so needed and, I know, has already been well received! The people of Manchester, along with others across the country, have worked tirelessly; supporting local food banks and organisations that help to look after all of us both physically and mentally. People have purchased gifts, made gifts and offered the gift of time to volunteer in order to benefit others.

Manchester Museum has also been able to share in the gift of giving – staff have volunteered to pack and dispatch creative care packs, and we have shared craft materials and gifted shop merchandise. We’ve also been working hard developing creative ways to deliver our wellbeing work online.

Mr Dickens can be reassured that so many of us have kept the spirit of Christmas throughout 2020 in all we do, from the work of local volunteers, to that of famous faces like Captain Tom and Manchester’s own Marcus Rashford, and of course the tireless work of all the amazing key workers keeping us going.

Seasons Greetings folks… make it count… for each other and yourselves, see you in 2021!
